Steve and Sarah Barlow opened The Cedar Chest in 1996 in what was a former Texaco Gas Station built around 1930. The unique style of the building, complete with original hardwood flooring, was the backdrop for what become a women’s boutique. In no time, it became obvious that more space was needed so The Cedar Chest doubled its space to bring in more unique Gift & Home and Apparel product lines.
Focus on Local Flavor
The focus of the store became searching for quality products that were made in Texas and the United States. We wanted to build a shopping experience in keeping with the casual rural setting of a Texas Hill Country town yet blending the latest in products and well-known designer apparel lines. The products have changed over time, but the goal of finding the best products and unique styles are always at the forefront of our selections.
A Special Name
Over twenty years ago, we named the store after Nellie Allen, my husband’s adorable grandmother. Nellie’s cedar chest was passed down to us around this time; and to remember her, the store was named after her treasured heirloom. A cedar chest in past times was known to hold those things that were special. That is the concept that we have maintained in the business today. We want things that set our business apart from others and give our customer the feeling that they are taking home something special. We want our store to give our customers the experience of stepping back in time while finding a wonderful treasure along the way.
